Grade 5 Curriculum

The fifth grade forms the fifth year of primary education for students in Elementary school. Students enrolled in this grade are usually 10 to 11 years old. Subjects taught in the fourth grade typically include Math, Science, Social Studies, Language and physical education. Music and Art are also part of the curriculum along with sexual or health education.

Grade 5 Online Elementary Courses:

In Math, students are taught more advanced concepts including long division and multiplication of vulgar fractions and decimals. Basic algebra may also be taught as part of this curriculum. Students are taught to develop more complex language skills with advanced grammar concepts. The basics of physical and life sciences are introduced as part of the Science curriculum and History and Geography are furthered as part of the Social Studies curriculum.

Does Your Child Need Help With Academic Grades?

Forest Trail Academy offers a specialized Prescriptive/Adaptive Program for children with special needs. This system has been designed keeping in mind the learning needs of such children. Implemented as a self-paced learning system, this program combines advanced technology with academic state standards to improve student performance.

In keeping with the standards set by the No Child Left Behind Act, Forest Trail Academy provides several web-based lessons spanning 6 skill levels. These courses are designed to provide both remediation and instruction to students who are a grade level behind or are falling short of the required credits.

What are the goals of 5th grade learning?

The primary learning goals in 5th grade include:

  • Building academic independence and self-discipline
  • Mastering advanced math concepts such as fractions, decimals, and basic algebra
  • Developing strong reading comprehension and analytical skills
  • Expanding knowledge in physical and life sciences
  • Strengthening communication through structured writing and grammar

 5th grade reading instruction focuses on helping students:

  • Analyze characters, plot, and theme across literary genres
  • Compare and contrast texts, including nonfiction and historical documents
  • Use evidence from texts to support ideas and opinions
  • Expand vocabulary through context clues and root words
  • Develop fluency and deeper comprehension through regular reading practice

By the end of 5th grade, students are expected to:

  • Write clearly in multiple formats including essays, narratives, and reports
  • Demonstrate fluency in operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions
  • Apply critical thinking and problem-solving across all subjects
  • Conduct basic scientific investigations and report findings
  • Understand more complex social studies themes, such as early American history and world geography

Language development at this stage includes:

  • Mastering advanced grammar concepts like verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement
  • Expanding vocabulary through reading and direct instruction
  • Writing with proper punctuation, spelling, and sentence variety
  • Organizing ideas into clear paragraphs and multi-paragraph texts
  • Editing and revising written work for clarity and correctness
