M/J Grade 8 Pre Algebra Course Outline

First, the students will learn to formulate expressions and equations, show the association of data with a linear equation, and to solve linear equations. The students will become comfortable using the linear equation, y = mx + b.

They will understand that m represents the rate of change of the two variables. In addition they will understand the graphs are lines through the origin. The students will become comfortable using a linear equation to describe the relationship between two values in bivariate data. They will also be able to solve problems with one linear equation and systems with two linear equations

Second, the students will learn to understand functions and to use a function to describe quantitative relationships. They will understand that functions help to describe situations where one quantity is dependent on another. Third, the students will learn to assess two- and three-dimensional shapes using distance, angle, and similarity using ideas about distance and angles and how they behave.

The students will understand the Pythagorean Theorem and be able to explain why it is true. They will learn to use the theorem to find distances between points on the coordinate plane, to find lengths, and to analyze triangles. The students will complete their study of volume by learning to solve for the volume of cones, cylinders, and spheres.
