The Order of Operations for a Mid-Year Switch

- Start enrollment at the new school first. Begin the application before you withdraw your child from the current school. A gap between “withdrawn” and “enrolled” is what triggers truancy questions from your district, so this order matters more than any other step on this list.
- Request academic records and transcripts from the current school in writing. Ask for grades, credits earned this term, and any special education or 504 documentation.
- Complete enrollment paperwork and payment with the new school. Once this is confirmed, your child has a seat waiting.
- Send written withdrawal notice to the current school. Keep a copy for your records.
- File any state-required notice, such as a withdrawal form or notice of intent to homeschool or enroll elsewhere. Requirements vary by state (see below).
- Start coursework once records arrive and your child is placed at the right level.

What Your Child’s State May Require
Withdrawal and enrollment rules differ by state. Some states ask only for a signed withdrawal form. Others require a notice of intent filed with the district or the state education agency. Forest Trail Academy has published state-specific guides for families in these states:
Indiana is a good example of why this step matters. A student in grades 9 through 12 who leaves a public school there needs a state-approved withdrawal form signed by both the principal and a parent. If the school refuses to sign, that refusal gets reported to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, which can affect a teen’s driving privileges. Rules like this exist in most states, in one form or another.

What Happens to Credits Already Earned This Term
Nothing your child has already earned this term gets thrown out. Our team reviews the transcript from the current school, including any partial-term grades, and places your child at the appropriate level rather than starting the whole term over.

How Fast a Student Can Actually Start

Records requests can be the slowest part, since they depend on the current school’s office hours and staffing, so it helps to ask for them in writing on the same day you decide to switch.
What It Costs
Tuition runs from $3,069 to $4,269 per year, depending on grade level. Families who prefer to pay monthly can choose a payment plan:
- Elementary school: $236 per month
- Middle school: $286 per month
- High school: $336 per month

Common Questions About Switching Mid-Year
Can we switch schools in the middle of a semester?
Yes. Enrollment is open year-round, and there is no rule requiring families to wait for a new semester or school year.
Will my child lose the current semester?
No. We review the transcript for work already completed and place your child accordingly, rather than restarting the term.
What about an IEP or 504 plan?
Send that documentation along with your records request. Our admissions team will go over your child’s support needs with you directly, so we can talk through what a plan for your child looks like before enrollment is final. What if my child is behind on credits?
